Pete Sampras, who could have regained the No. 1 world ranking with a win, was upset by nemesis Paul Haarhuis 7-5, 6-7 (5-7), 6-1 in the quarterfinals of the Champions Cup. Andre Agassi could have claimed the No. 1 spot, but lost to Michael Chang 6-7 (3-7), 6-2, 6-1.
