Forest Workers Could Face Layoffs

From Staff And Wire Reports

Nez Perce National Forest employees could face layoffs as early as next month as forest officials work to trim their budget by about $3 million.

Forest Supervisor Coy Jemmett said the cutbacks in staff and services are part of the Clinton Administration and Congressional budget reduction.

Forest officials are expected to meet the first week of April and make determinations then about layoffs. The action will affect permanent and seasonal employees.

The Nez Perce Forest is the largest employer in Idaho County, with about 220 permanent employees and up to 540 during the summer months.

Dallas Emch of the Clearwater National Forest at Orofino said no such measures are being considered on that forest this fiscal year.
