Hazzard Suffers Stroke

Compiled From Wire Services

Former UCLA basketball coach Walt Hazzard suffered a stroke but remained conscious, a hospital spokesman said.

“He’s now in stable condition,” said Greg Madsen of Midway Hospital in Los Angeles. “When I last saw him he was alert, his eyes were open and he was talking to his wife.”

Hazzard, 54, was to be transferred to UCLA Medical Center, Madsen said.

Montana State’s Mick Durham was named men’s basketball coach of the year for the Big Sky Conference.

Montana aide Leroy Washington took a similar job at Oregon State.

North Carolina State coach Les Robinson, 53, resigned with one year left on his contract.

George Washington coach Mike Jarvis signed an extension that will keep him at the school through at least 2000.

Illinois-Chicago fired coach Bob Hallberg, prompting reports that Illinois assistant Jimmy Collins may be hired.
