Heisman watch

Danny Wuerrfel, survived a scare at Vanderbilt, but compiled impressive statistics (283 yards, four TDs) and set a major college career mark (103 career TD passes).

Trophy trivia: Could be the first SEC quarterback to win the Heisman since Auburn’s Pat Sullivan. Prior to that, the last SEC quarterback to win was Wuerrfel’s coach, Steve Spurrier.

Iowa State’s Troy Davis, rushed for 228 yards and two TDs against Colorado and needs 178 yards to become first player with two 2,000-yard rushing seasons.

Trophy trivia: Davis is already the only player to gain 2,000 yards rushing and not win the Heisman.

Orlando Pace, OL, Ohio State, entered Saturday’s game with 59 pancake blocks. He has not allowed a sack in two seasons.

Trophy trivia: The best finish by an offensive lineman in the past 20 years was fifth place by Nebraska’s Dave Remington in 1982.

Byron Hanspard, Texas Tech, gained 132 yards in a loss to Texas and slipped to second in the nation in rushing.

Trophy trivia: Hanspard and Davis could become the only pair to rush for 2,000 yards in the same season. They could also be the only two 2,000 yard rushers to fail to win the Heisman.
