Avalanche Center Opens For Winter

The Gallatin National Forest Avalanche Center has opened for the 1996-1997 winter, signaling the start of another avalanche season.

Snow reports - whether avalanche danger is running from low to extreme and whether avalanches are possible, probable, likely or certain - will be issued on an intermittent basis for now.

But once the snow season starts in earnest, advisories will be issued every day except Tuesday, said Karl Birkleland, the center’s director.

Recorded avalanche advisories are available at (406) 587-6981. Faxed advisories are available at (406) 587-6984. Advisories also are on the Internet.
