Cougs Trip Up Bulldogs

Junior forward Tina Walsh scored the first two goals of the match for Washington State and the Cougars went on to post a 4-1 non-conference women’s soccer win at Gonzaga University’s Martin Field Sunday.

The loss dropped the Bulldogs to 0-2. It was Washington State’s first game this season.

Walsh’s first goal at the 6:30 mark came after she intercepted a clearing pass to the right of the goal by Gonzaga keeper Amy Dorsett.

The second goal was a lob shot from the right wing over the outstretched Dorsett at 37 minutes and gave the Cougars a 2-0 halftime advantage. Walsh also played a part in the third WSU goal, her crossing pass finding Tari Beck, who drilled the ball past Dorsett from 8 yards at 55 minutes. The final WSU goal came from Jody Payne at 75 minutes.

Gonzaga’s Liesl Handwerker ruined the shutout bid by WSU’s Jessica Glazer as her corner kick found the net as Glazer was unable to secure the ball in the melee of players in front of her at 77 minutes. It was GU’s first goal of the season.

Brymile drops quarterfinal game

Brymile, of Spokane, lost a quarterfinal game 1-0 to Boston’s Tighe Club at the Men’s Major Modified Fastpitch National Tournament in Steven’s Point, Wis.

Tighe, which won the tourney in 1994, scored the winning run on a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning. Brymile, the ‘95 champs, must now win five straight games today to make it to the finals.

In an earlier game, Brymile pounded Dillinger’s, the Minnesota state champions, 16-3 in five innings. Dan Schaffer had four hits and Mark Arland and Kurt Krauth each drove in four runs to pace Brymile.
