Gsl At A Glance
Mead Panthers
1995 record: 7-1, 7-2, lost in the first round of the playoffs.
Coach: Mike McLaughlin
Years coaching and record: 15, 92-39-2.
Returning starters: Scott McGlocklin, 217, sr., FB; Joe Collier, 260, sr., OT; Scott Sulpizio, 224, sr., C; Nate Adams, 178, jr., QB; Cody Ferguson, 210, sr., LB-OG; Jon Wells, 185, sr., SE; Jason DeJong, 204, sr., P; Evan Thomas, 174, sr., DB; Ryan Spidahl, 175, sr., DB.
New starters: Jacob Troyer, 216, sr., OG; Jeff Smith, 228, sr., DT; Quentin Goulding, 187, sr., WR; Dustin Hardin, 196, sr, WR; Zach Cassel, 172, jr., WR; Kyle Ellenz, 175, soph., WR; Ossim Hatem, 223, jr., ILB; Nic Kuhta, 208, sr., LB; Chris McCullough, 185, jr., LB; Arthur Avalon, 259, sr., DL; Isaac Franklin, 180, sr., DL; Chris Rosenzweig, 210, sr., DL.
Quick kicks: McGlocklin, the only returning first-team all-league selection on offense, was third in the league last year with 909 yards rushing. … The Panthers have made the playoffs seven straight years. … McGlocklin, Collier and Sulpizio, could see double duty on defense. Collier and Sulpizio, plus DeJong, were All-GSL second team. DeJong led the league in punting with a 29.5 average. … The Panthers have an experienced offensive line, a rarity in the league this year. … Adams got valuable experience last year, including a start in Mead’s playoff loss to Walla Walla, but is being pushed by junior Brandon Muzatko, who didn’t play last year. … Punter DeJong could be the kicker but so could junior T.J. Belcastro, the brother of a former Mead kicker. … The Panthers have a lot of choices, though all are inexperienced, at wide receiver.
Coach’s comment: “We have adequate team speed but we’re missing the excellent speed we’ve had in recent years. There’s not much speed in the league. We need to rebuild the defensive front.”
Outlook: If the linebackers and offensive line play up to their potential and the defensive line develops, the Panthers are the team to beat.
Gonzaga Prep Bullpups
1995 record: 5-3, 6-3.
Coach: Don Anderson
Years and record: 35, 258-55-4
Returning starters: Ian Kelly, 213, sr., C; Paul Clark, 239, sr., OL; Zack Yarborough, 206, jr., OL; Mark Doolittle, 182, sr., TE; Ryan Turner, 170, sr., WR; Sean Thacker, 195, jr., WR; Kevin O’Connell, 211, jr., QB; Nick Bliss, 167, jr, RB; Jason Francis, 233, sr., DL; Tyson Thielman, 198, sr., LB; Shane Hartnett, 200, jr., DB; Jay Herrin, 165, jr., DB.
New starters: Brandon Kendall, 169, jr., RB; Damien Ramirez, 150, jr., DB; Jeremy Rash, 171, jr., DB; Kevin Cronin, 170, jr., LB; Sam Magee, 191, sr., LB; Sean O’Connor, 187, jr., LB; Darren Ferrell, 247, sr, OL; Jeremy Adams, 247, sr., OL; Nick Sullivan, 193, sr., DL; Chris Mutton, 260, sr., DL; Matt Betts, 247, jr., OL.
Quick kicks: The quarterback is big-time but the running backs are unproven. … Traditionally a wishbone team, a number of backs have gotten the opportunity to start. … O’Connell was the No. 5 punter in the league last year.
Coach’s comment: “We have some good individuals. We need a whole lot more in terms of depth. We need some people to step up to the level of our good ones.”
Outlook: It’s rare when the Bullpups aren’t in contention for a playoff spot and, with the playoff field expanded, Prep becomes one of the teams to beat instead of a challenger.
Ferris Saxons
1995 record: 3-5, 3-6.
Coach: Clarence Hough
Years coaching and record: 2, 3-6
Returning starters: Justin Bursch, 190, sr., QB; Ty Williams, 180, jr., RB; Jonathan Parker, 170, jr., WR; Sam Pernell, 158, WR; Jeff Dahmen, 190, sr., C; Tom Farrell, 210, OL; Todd McCoy, 202, jr., OL; James Missel, 206, jr., OL; J.P. Dowling, 211, jr., OL; Isaac Carter, 207, jr.,LB; B.J. Wilkerson, 178, sr., LB; Joel Soter, 182, sr., LB; Richard Cassens, 190, sr., LB-K; Brandon Riordan, 262, DL; Dave Eastham, 210, sr., DL; Jeff Lampert, 167, FS; K.C. McVey, 152, jr, DB; Brent Molsberry, 172, sr., DB.
New starters: Tommy Servine, 187, jr., WR; Nick Bozo, 175, soph., WR; Garth Hamilton, 181, TE; Matt Dillon, 213, soph., DL; Jeff O’Neill, 183, jr., DL.
Quick kicks: Bursch threw for more than 1,700 yards last season. … Williams, the featured back, finished sixth in a national decathlon competition in Spokane over the summer. … All the linebackers return, providing optimism for a much-improved defense. … Parker was seventh in the league with 385 yards receiving on 23 catches, four for TDs, despite missing the last two games with a knee injury. … Carter tied for third in interceptions with three.
Coach’s comment: “I really think our line play is going to dictate how we’re going to do. I think our stand-up skill guys are pretty talented. We have to take the pressure off (the quarterback). We’re not particularly big, a lot of 6-foot, 200 and 5-11, 210 guys.”
Outlook: A preseason magazine ranked the Saxons 10th in the state, the only GSL team in the poll, which would make them the league favorites. Opposing coaches also put Ferris among the favorites but it is a long jump from 3-6 to league champion. The Saxons can contend if the defense can stop anyone and the offense is more than Bursch piling up big numbers out of desperation.
Central Valley Bears
1995 record: 8-0, 9-1.
Coach: Rick Giampietri
Years and record: 4, 19-8-1
Returning starters: Peter Martin, 198, sr., K; Nate Bartlett, 205, sr., DE; Nate McFarlane, 147, jr., CB; Wil Beck, 282, jr., NG; Preston Crossman, 350, jr., RT.
New starters: Andy Van Hees, 240, sr., LT; Tyler Zyph, 160, sr., WR; Zac Scott, 166, jr., CB-WR; Justin Folkins, 175, soph., FS; Chad Adamson, 167, jr., QB; Tyree Clowe, 190, soph., ILB-FB; Patrick Flanigan, 167, sr., FS; Courtney Brown, , 180, jr., OLB; Garrett Graham, 204, jr., ILB-FB; Ryan Nelson, 170, jr., OLB; Jason Robisch, 200, jr., C-DT; Brandon Bouge, 233, jr., LG-DT; Chris Sullivan, 260, jr., RG; Colin White, 185, jr., DE; Todd Millar, 166, jr., WR-CB; Marc Hinkley, 180, jr., TE-DE.
Quick kicks: A close battle at quarterback between Bartlett and Adamson. If Adamson starts, Zyph is the only senior on offense, depending on how LT is split between Van Hees and Beck. Bartlett is the only likely senior starter on defense, depending on free safety. … Beck is the only returning first-team all-league player on defense. … McFarlane was third in the league with three interceptions last year. … After welcoming 23 senior lettermen last year, this year there are seven seniors on the team. … A number of sophomores fill out the two-deep roster. … Unfavorable schedule, with Mead, Prep and U-Hi following after the opener against Rogers.
Coach’s comment: “I really like the talent our kids have. The key for us is staying healthy. We have to improve weekly and our schedule isn’t good for that.”
Outlook: The Bears are talented and young and if they can make it through the early part of the schedule they could contend for the title. If not, they’ll be in the battle for a playoff spot.
Lewis and Clark Tigers
1995 record: 5-3, 5-3.
Coach: John Hook
Years coaching and record: 21, 113-75-3
Returning starters: Andy Allen, 196, sr., LB; Josh Bankston, 172, sr., RB-CB; Neil Carson, 179, sr., DL; LaSean Grant, 300, sr., OL; Chris Sherlock, 196, sr., LB; Bryce Stack, 194, sr., TE-DL; Cody Glotfelty, 195, jr., OL.
New starters: Brian Agnew, 215, sr., QB; Jeff Wood, 170, sr., LB; Joe Ireland, 213, sr., RB.
Quick kicks: The Tigers return little experience, especially on the offensive line and at wide receiver, putting pressure on experienced running backs and a new quarterback. … Rivals are wary of the Tigers anyway because of the tradition of aggressive and emotional play that can cover up a lot of weaknesses. … Gonzaga Prep transfer Joe Ireland is at running back after playing on the line last year.
Coach’s comment: “We have to establish an offensive line. I would say we enjoyed a relatively balanced offense (last year) but we realize to be a league contender you have to be able to run the ball consistently.”
Outlook: Not only do the Tigers have a lot of question marks, they open the season against South Hill rival Ferris. The schedule is favorable after that, in terms of allowing the team to mature while providing the opportunity to win. However, if they stumble, the stretch run is going to make it difficult for them to contend.
Shadle Park Highlanders
1995 record: 3-5, 3-6.
Coach: Mark Hester
Years coaching and record: 14, 72-51-0
Returning starters: Kris Walters, 180, sr., QB-K; Sam Glanzer, 190, sr., OG; Tom Mohr, 185, sr., TE-LB; Kerry Hipps, 175, jr., LB; Jeff Lafferty, 190, sr., LB; Clint Williamson, 260, sr., DL; Chris Ryan, 170, jr., DB; Tim Snell, 160, jr., K-RB-LB-P.
New starters: Marty Lund, 185, sr., OG; Nick Bender, 150, sr., RB; Mike Doyle, 190, jr., C; Cody Smith, 195, sr., OT; Ben Monger, 225, sr., OT; Ben Pate, 170, sr., SE-DB; Steve Larson, 165, sr., SE; John Ball, 245, sr., DT; Matt Moore,195, sr, DE; Drew Sullivan, 175, jr., DE.; Scott Burk, 160, sr., LB.
Quick kicks: Hester had 55 players his first year, this year there are 85 Highlanders, including 40 sophomores. … Although not many starters return, a lot of Highlanders got experience last year. … The offense will be more spread than the Wing-T the Highlanders used last year because of Walters, and there is more experience at receiver than there is at running back. … Walters will also double as a defensive back. He kicked 17 of 18 PATs last year. He also passed for 843 yards.
Coach’s comment: “We have to stop some people. Our defense has to get better and we have to continue to score. The teams that beat us bad last year are the teams we coudn’t stop.”
Outlook: Obviously the increased numbers indicate the program is heading in the right direction. If Walters gets any support, the Highlanders should battle for a playoff spot.
Rogers Pirates
1995 record: 0-8, 0-9.
Coach: Dave Pomanate
Years and record: 6 10-33-0
Returning starters: Danny Cuclich, 200, sr., TE; Matt Gilliland, 220, sr., OG; Justin Ulmer, 260, jr., OG; Shane Anderson, 190, sr., OT; Jameus Hutchens, 190, sr., OT; Gerry Griffin, 230, sr., C; Kevin Patrick, 200, sr., OL; Matt Borders, 155, sr., WR; Daryn Steeneck, 160, sr., WR; Kevin Oglesbee, 170, sr., WR-LB-P; Lewis Daniels, 170, sr., WR; Ryan Hill, 180, sr., RB; Aaron Evans, 180, sr., RB. Daryl Groom, 140, sr., CB; Nick Fuller, 150, sr., CB; Kent Browning, 165, sr., S; Shawn Carlson, 165, sr., DB; Lewis Wirth, 205, sr., MLB; Andy Bayne, 190, jr. OLB; Adam Jarrad, 190, sr., DE; J.C. Claason, 190, sr., DT;
Possible starters: Jeff Mace, 155, jr., QB; Chris Patterson, 145, jr., RB; Kris Clark, 160, jr., RB; Ben Norby, 185, jr., DT; Buddy Honshell, 175, sr., DE; Eric Rushing, 210, jr., DE.
Quick kicks: The Pirates followed a winning season with a winless season, they hope they don’t have to go 22 years between winning seasons. … Last year’s quarterback Danny Cuculich is now a tight end and junior Jeff Mace has moved behind center. … In a winless season, many players get a chance to start, giving Rogers as much experience as anyone in the league, although an injury and a transfer claimed two starters. … Hill was fourth in the league with 662 yards rushing.
Coach’s comment: “I think the key for us is to take a step mentally. I think we have some talent. Personally, as a coach, I’m disappointed with the number of guys that didn’t turn out. We’re at our lowest in three years and we projected our highest. In the off-season I said I wanted guys that were dedicated to the cause, the cause being that we’d be good. I think the guys we have obviously are dedicated.
Outlook: After a great season two years ago, no one expected the Pirates to tumble to the basement. If all the players who got experience last year can remember how a winning record was achieved in 1994, the Pirates can challenge. If they fold under adversity, it could be a struggle to stay out of the basement.
University Titans
1995 record: 4-4, 4-5.
Coach: Mike Gainey
Years and record: 4 7-19-1
Returning starters: Mike Turner, 165, sr., CB; Tim Buchanan, 190, sr., RB’ Justin Chissus, 220, sr., OT; Zaq Flanary, 240, sr., OT-DT; Kelly Tift, 160, sr., K; Cody Hirschi, 200, sr., RB-WR-LB.
New starters: Jason Berger, 160, sr., WR-CB; Rob Bartlett, 170, sr., QB;Chris Short, 170, jr., S; Nick Mattioda, 175, jr., S; Jason Bright, 170, sr., RB-LB; Ryan Metcalf, 210, jr., OG-DE; Mike Inge, 185, sr., DT; Kendrick Chane, 230, jr., C.
Quick kicks: Buchanan also starts at defensive end, Tift will be a receiver and Chissus is a linebacker. … Buchanan, fifth in the league with 606 yards rushing last year, is questionable for the non-league opener at Eisenhower after being stabbed in an altercation at the fair Sunday night. … Tift made all 24 of his PATS in league games. … Flanary was a second-team all-league pick on the defensive line.
Coach’s comment: “Our success will depend on the development of our offensive and defensive lines. We have a good set of running backs and receivers.”
Outlook: The Titans were just inches or seconds from beating both Mead and Gonzaga Prep, which would have put them in the playoffs. They lost a lot of players off that team so a lot of players have to step up to put them in the battle for the expanded playoffs.
North Central Indians
1995 record: 1-7, 1-8.
Coach: Wes Hobbs
Years and record: First year at NC after coaching at Moses Lake 1990-94.
Starters: Mike Caballero, 190, jr., QB-ILB; Dustin Clark, 150, jr., CB; Ryan Corigliano, 165, sr., FS; Justin Lake, 175, sr., FB-OLB; Ray Bowser, 145, jr., RHB; Toby Rose, 180, sr., OLB; Aaron Dacy, 175, jr., LHB-CB; Brian Mack, 170, jr., FB; Justin Harrison, 215, sr., ILB-C; Tim Cain, 186, sr., C; David Sandberg, 210, jr., RG-DE; Derrick Phillips, 255, jr., RT-DT; Brandon Harmer, 210, sr., LG-DE; Brett Jordan, 275, sr., LT-DT; Damien Johnson, 180, sr., WR; Shawn Erickson, 145, soph., WR; Ryan Fielder, 175, sr., TE; Briant Thatcher, 170, sr., TE.
Quick kicks: Eight players are scheduled to be two-way starters. … Brian Burrows, a 230-pound senior, is expected to back up every position on the line. … The Indians have 47 freshmen out, a good sign for the future.
Coach’s comment: “Stay healthy, that’s our No. 1 concern. The second thing is compete, we can’t roll over. We’re asking our upperclassmen to set an example for the freshmen.”
Outlook: The Indians haven’t always been successful but they’ve always competed hard. They have to continue to do that if they hope to contend in the future.
