Trailing 3-0, the Bullpups drove deep into Highlanders territory but had a run inside the 5 wiped out by a penalty that pushed them back to the 29, and they never threatened again until late.

Star of the game

Jeff Lafferty ran hard and tackled harder for the Highlanders. He rushed for 105 yards and spearheaded a defense that limited Prep to less than 200 yards. Kris Walters and Tim Snell also were big on defense.

Notable

The Highlanders have eight league wins since capturing the league title in 1991, the last time they beat Prep, 20-17. Prior to that, it was 1982, 14-0… . Prep avoided a shutout with a long play with 1:20 to play. The last time the Pups were blanked was 19-0 by Mead in 1991…. The Highlanders put a hurt on Prep QB Kevin O’Connell. The Bulllpups had 23 plays in the first half, 17 were O’Connell runs or passes and he punted three times.

On the first offensive play of the game, the Tigers drilled Ferris tailback Ty Williams and Jeff Wood recovered for LC on the Ferris 32. The Tigers cashed in seven plays later and never trailed.

Stars of the game

LC’s Joe Ireland, whose eligibility was in question until the day before the game - and will be debated further in court next month - was a workhorse on offense with 21 carries. He also blocked well for Josh Bankston, who had 138 yards on 23 carries, and helped spearhead a defense that kept the explosive Saxons in check.

Notable

LC controlled the ball for 15 of the 24 minutes in the first half, taking a 7-0 lead, and then gave the Saxons the ball for 1:32 of the third quarter, which included a punt and two kickoffs. Meanwhile, the Tigers went on scoring drives of 68 and 64 yards for a 17-0 lead… . In the 48-minute game, Ferris’ defense was on the field almost 32 minutes… . The Tigers have now won three straight in the South Hill rivalry and they ended a five-game losing streak in season openers… . LC senior quarterback Brian Agnew, who had taken maybe three snaps without throwing a pass in a varsity game, completed seven of 11 passes for 58 yards and a touchdown and ran for another score.

Eisenhower 35, U-Hi 0

Senior Eric Zahler carried the ball 11 times for 169 yards and two touchdowns and kicked five extra points to lead the Cadets past the Titans in Yakima.

Zahler, the leading scorer in the Big Nine Conference a year ago, finished with 259 all-purpose yards. Travis Francis added 104 yards on 20 carries as Eisenhower amassed 339 yards on the ground to 45 for University.
