Chewelah Steps Up To Win Highlander Invitational

The Chewelah boys stepped up against larger schools Saturday to win the senior boys division at Shadle Park’s Highlander Invitational cross country meet.

Chewelah, the defending State A/B champion, scored 73 points to lead the division at the 2.5-mile race. The next eight placers were AAA teams.

University’s James Berry topped the senior field in 12 minutes, 55 seconds, 9 seconds up on Riverside’s Jon Ashcraft.

Second-ranked U-Hi won the varsity girls division with 96 points, two fewer than Mead. Third-place Eisenhower (138) was hurt when its No. 3 runner dropped out.

Ike’s Stephanie Heaton won in 15:14, 4 seconds ahead of Mead’s Katie Pollock. Defending champion Jessica Riehle of West Valley placed eighth in 15:54.

U-Hi edged Gonzaga Prep 36-38 in the junior boys race won by Prep’s Jim Rucker in 13:11. U-Hi also won the freshman race and placed second to Ike in the sophomore field.

Devon VanDyne’s 16:45 led U-Hi to the junior varsity girls title. Riverside won the freshman girls title. Shadle’s Erin Krogel (17:00) finished first.

The East Valley girls and Isaac Hawkins of Ferris were champions at the Sandy (Ore.) Invitational.

EV, the two-time defending State AA champion, bunched together five runners from 11th to 20th place. Cara Smith led the way with a time of 20:46 over 5,000 meters. EV scored 74, 20 less than Jesuit (Ore.) to top the 16-team field.

Ferris finished third (95) with three runners in the top five, led by runner-up Jennifer Smith (19:29).

Hawkins’ 16:03 edged Rhy Reynolds of Newport, Ore., by 4 seconds. Ferris scored 97 to finish second to Oregon City’s 62.

Dustin Sletner’s runner-up finish helped EV to the team title at Clarkston’s Seaport Run.

Sletner completed the 3 miles in 16:23, 10 seconds behind the host Bantams’ Paul Abernathy. EV scored 37 points to easily top runner-up Moscow (92).

Volleyball

Paige Quistad had four of her 11 kills and Lindsey Braff five of her 10 assists in the fifth game as Colville (2-1) outlasted visiting Clarkston 16-14, 4-15, 15-4, 9-15, 15-5 in a Frontier League match.

Colville led the first game 7-1, then held tough when the Bantams (1-1) rallied and served for the game. Colville’s Alison McGrane served a 10-point run, including three aces, in the third game. The Bantams’ Tracie Thayer had four kills and five blocks.

Football

Cameron Carstensen caught three passes for 85 yards and rushed for 71 to lead Almira/Coulee-Hartline to a 34-7 non-league win over visiting Kettle Falls (0-2) at Coulee City.

Topher Goodwin rushed for 76 yards on 16 carries and Jason Pierce completed 7 of 10 passes for 100 yards for the Warriors (1-1).

Girls soccer

Rachel Cox set up both goals as Colville edged visiting Clarkston 2-1 in Frontier play. Brandi Maras scored early and Stacey McConnell at 66 minutes for Colville (1-2, 1-1). Danika Van Tine of Clarkston (0-2, 0-2) tied the match at 31:40.
