Matlock Wins 400th As Ccs Takes Third
Community Colleges of Spokane captured third place out of 14 teams at its annual Inland NW Communications Tournament Saturday, and in the process, 11-year volleyball coach Irene Matlock won her 400th career match.
The Sasquatch lost to eventual winner College of Southern Idaho in the semifinals 15-1, 15-6 at Spokane CC. CSI beat Ricks in the final 15-6. 14-16, 15-5.
CCS had beaten Mt. Hood in the quarterfinals 18-16, 15-12 for Matlock’s 400th win.
Earlier in the day at Spokane Falls CC, the Sasquatch beat Centralia 17-15, 15-4 and Clackamas 15-10, 12-15, 15-4.
CCS middle hitter Jenni Rosselli was named to the all-tournament team.
Gonzaga University jumped out to an 8-0 lead in Game 3 and held on to defeat Boise State 15-7, 17-15, 15-10 at Martin Center.
Gonzaga (6-8) travels to Seattle Monday to face Washington, No. 24 in the USA Today/AVCA poll.
Theresa Spink, who produced eight kills in the final game, paced Gonzaga with 16 kills and 12 digs. Jennifer Kubista added 15 kills and nine digs, barely missing another double-double. Out of the 14 matches this season, Kubista has nailed double-digit kills in 11.
At Cheney, two days after an impressive Big Sky opening-match win, Eastern Washington was upset by Cal State Northridge 12-15, 15-7, 11-15, 15-10, 15-7.
The loss dropped the Eagles to 6-4, 1-1 in conference play. The Matadors have only two wins on the year, both in conference play, and improved to 2-0, 2-8.
Kim Exner led the Eagles with 22 kills (.264) and 16 digs. Toni Schwinn had 44 assists. CSN’s Getty Dimitrova had a match-high 26 kills in the 2-hour, 14-minute match.
Men’s soccer
Rio Threestar scored both Whitworth goals to lead the Pirates to a 2-0 win against Linfield in a NCIC match at McMinnville, Ore. The win improved Whitworth to 2-2.
At Tacoma, Hayden Lake, Idaho, freshman Brett Fink scored four goals and Community Colleges of Spokane raised its perfect record to 10-0 and 5-0 in NWAACC play with its 5-1 triumph over Tacoma CC.
Women’s soccer
Haley Nichols scored a hat trick and Jen Tissue punched in two goals to lead Whitworth past Linfield in a NCIC season-opening match at McMinnville, Ore.
The Pirates are 6-1, 1-0. The Wildcats dropped to 0-1, 0-4.
At Tacoma, Holly Vanwert scored Community College of Spokane’s only goal at 20:00 and Tacoma’s Molly Skelton countered 15 minutes later as the teams played to a 1-1 tie.
CCS’s record is 5-1-2, 3-0-1 in NWAACC play. Tacoma also is 3-0-1 in conference games.
Cross country
Washington State’s Eric Kamau was timed in 24 minutes, 36 seconds to claim third place individually as the Cougars finished third overall with 74 points behind Portland (32) and Oklahoma State (40) at the Big Cross Invitational at Pasco.
Oklahoma State’s Cowboys entered the meet ranked No. 1 nationally. OSU’s Christian Nicolson led the NCAA Division I men in 24:23.
In the NCAA Division I women’s race, Oregon runners finished first through fourth to edge Washington State 26-35. Oregon’s Marie Davis won in 18:14. WSU’s Kristin Liebich was fifth at 18:31.
North Idaho College won the open race behind Heather Harmon’s 19:38, which was 20th overall.
