Metrostars Win Opener
Peter Vermes scored in the 11th round of a shootout to give New York-New Jersey a 3-2 victory over D.C. United in the first game of the Major League Soccer Eastern Conference series.
Vermes’ low bouncing shot eluded Jeff Causey, giving the MetroStars a 6-5 edge in the shootout. New York-New Jersey can wrap up best-of-three first-round series Friday night at Washington.
Giovanni Savarese tied it 2-2 in the 75th minute, just a minute after he entered the game as a substitute. Savarese beat defender Eddie Pope to a low cross from Antony De Avila.
Tampa Bay and Columbus begin play today in Columbus.
