Add Swing To Backyard Scene

Don And Dave Runyan U-Bild Features

The classic two-bench lawn swing is an annual favorite for cool summertime relaxation and conversation. This do-it-yourself version will quickly transform an ordinary shady spot in the yard into a great place to cool down, swing and chat.

Although it’s large, the swing is fairly inexpensive and easy to build. Average do-it-yourselfers will need only a weekend or two to finish it. Standard fir was used for the prototype pictured here, but another economical lumber can be substituted. Other materials include four pieces of water pipe and nuts, bolts, screws and nails.

Straight cuts of fir make up most of the swing’s pieces, and all the curved cuts (like the armrests) are traced from full-size patterns. Assembly is simply a matter of screwing and bolting the pieces together. Paint, stain or whitewash finishes the job.

The completed swing measures about 8 feet high by 7.5 feet long by 6.5 feet wide.

The Lawn Swing plan, No. 276, is $7.95 and includes step-by-step instructions with photos, full-size traceable patterns, exploded assembly diagrams, cutting diagrams and a shopping list.

A package of four outdoor furniture plans, No. C94, is $19.95 and includes this project plus an outdoor rocker, a tree seat and a glider. A catalog picturing hundreds of projects is $3.95. Prices include postage and handling. Please allow 3-4 weeks for delivery (for first-class mail, add $1 per item up to $3 maximum).
