Sfcc Debate Teams Share Several Competition Awards

Spokane Falls Community College debaters placed well in area tournaments this spring.

Two SFCC debate teams: Amity Lemburg and Jeremy Benson on one team, and Collin Imus and Adrian Ortiz on the other, shared the third-place award in the Northwest Forensic Conference Division III championships at SFCC.

Oritz also won the conference’s top debate speaker award.

During the tournament at Clackamas (Ore.) Community College, the SFCC team of Kalil Kendall and Leah Brown took first place in the Novice Parliamentary Debate. The speech and debate team finished third, overall.

During the Oregon tournament, the SFCC debaters received the following awards:

Kalil Kendall: first place, novice Dramatic Oral Interpretation; first place, novice Prose Oral Interpretation; and third place, novice Persuasion.

Adrian Oritz: third place; Open Prose Interpretation.

Jeremy Benson, fifth place; Debate Speakers.

Three Inland Northwest students attending Central Washington University-Spokane were named to the National Dean’s List. The students, their hometowns and majors, are:

Daro Palmer and William Palmer, biology majors, both from Kettle Falls, Wash.

John McMurtery, wind performance, Spokane.

Jeannie Ann Roellich was commissioned a second lieutenant upon graduation from the U.S. Air Force Academy, where she received a bachelor’s degree in political science with a minor in Spanish.

She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Roellich of Tekoa, Wash.

Randy Mickelsen, student activity director and math teacher at Mead High School, received the Golden Acorn Award from Mead’s PTSA for “exemplary volunteer service and dedication to children and youth in our community.”

Jennifer Liere recently graduated from Mesa State College, Grand Junction, Colo., with a degree in exercise science. She is a 1991 graduate of Mead High School.

Alan Utley, a Mead High School graduate, has joined the Peace Corps for a two-year assignment in Slovakia, where he will teach conversational English.

Utley received a bachelor’s degree in English from Western Washington University.

He is the son of Tom and Virginia Utley of Spokane.

Courtney Tombari graduated this spring from Santa Clara University and has been accepted to Gonzaga Law School on a scholastic scholarship.

Stacy Tombari graduated cum laude from Gonzaga Prep and will attend GU with a leadership scholarship.

They are the daughters of William and Veronica Tombari.

Jenny Filipy and Elizabeth Hudson, Mead High School students, received honorable mention at Washington state PTA’s Reflections Fine Arts Contest.

The students visual arts entries were among 1,182 submitted in four categories.

The PrideFoundation/Greater Seattle Business Association, has awarded $22,500 in scholarships to Washington state gays and lesbians to pursue undergraduate degrees.

Inland Northwest residents to receive scholarships are:

Jess DeShazo, Spokane Community College, the only woman in the auto mechanics program.

Leanne Norton, Spokane’s Intercollegiate Center for Nursing Education, plans to become a family nurse practitioner.
