Kids Wing It

Birdwatching

A nifty year-long birdwatching competition for kids helps develop observation skills and encourages them to write and sketch with the chance to win expensive prizes good for a lifetime.

The American Birding Association/Leica Young Birder of the Year competition provides A Field Guide to the Birds of North America and a field notebook and other materials worth $38 to participants who pay $17 in entry fees and memberships. In addition, entrants will get the ABA’s youth newletter, A Bird’s-Eye View.

Entries are judged in various categories, including essays and innovative development of their field notebooks. Prizes range from sound guides, computer software, attendance at ornithology camps and Leica binoculars.

Age categories are 10-12, 13-15 and 16-18.

Registration must be completed by September. For an entry form, telephone (719) 578-9703 or fax (719) 578-1480 or Email paulgrn@aba.org. The ABA website is http:/ /www.americanbirding.org/ , DataTimes
