Man Admits Severing His Own Penis And Lying To Police He Made Up Story About Being Mutilated By A Vengeful Woman

A man who claimed a woman named Brenda cut off his penis has admitted that he mutilated himself, police said Friday night.

At Alan Hall’s request, police said they would not disclose his motive for mutilating himself on Dec. 5. Doctors were unable to reattach the organ.

Authorities said the break in the case came Thursday when the 48-year-old pipe fitter and Vietnam veteran met with detectives to help develop a composite sketch of his alleged attacker.

During questioning, police said Hall admitted he mutilated himself with a hobby knife. On Friday, a voice stress analyzer confirmed Hall was not truthful and that the woman did not exist, police said.

“There were also no indications that anyone else was ever present inside Mr. Hall’s trailer when the incident occurred,” Lt. William Gresham said in a statement.

Hall, convicted in 1983 of voluntary manslaughter in the death of Denise Denofrio, told police that he ran into Brenda at a gas station and that she led him back to his trailer, where they had sex.

Afterward, police said, Brenda hinted that the woman he killed was her friend, which “caused the man to believe that she was seeking revenge.” She then cut off his penis and fled, police said.

After trying for hours to stop the bleeding himself, Hall stumbled out onto the front lawn, where a passer-by spotted him and called for help. Hall was rushed to a hospital.

He was discharged on Monday and was not seen until he showed up at police headquarters on Thursday.

Detectives said they received “a number” of telephone tips about the possible identity of Brenda. Several women named Brenda who live in the area were contacted in the past two days but provided no clues to the whereabouts of the alleged suspect.

Hall may face misdemeanor criminal charges of filing a false police report, a decision to be made by prosecutors.

In 1995, a man who told New York police that a vengeful prostitute cut off his penis said he got careless with a knife while making a guitar. Police said the 67-year-old man concocted the story because he was afraid the truth might get him committed to a mental institution.
