Boxer In Coma

Compiled From Wire Services

Light welterweight champion Felix Bwalya of Zambia was in a coma four days after winning the Commonwealth title from Paul Burke of Britain on a controversial decision.

Bwalya, who was knocked down three times in the final three rounds and was on the canvas when the final bell sounded, was admitted to Lusaka Teaching Hospital Tuesday after complaining of headaches.

He was put on life support in the intensive care unit. On Thursday, his condition was critical.

Hilary Matyola, head of the Zambia Boxing Board of Control, said board officials were discussing whether referee Hugo Mulenga should have stopped the 12-round fight. Bwalya was declared the winner on points by Mulenga.
