The San Diego City Council gave preliminary approval to a proposal to rename Jack Murphy Stadium in return for $18 million to complete an expansion. Under the plan, the stadium would be called Qualcomm Stadium at Jack Murphy Field. On top of the $18 million, Qualcomm Inc. has agreed to buy 268 general admission season tickets for five years and will contribute $50,000 toward a statue of Jack Murphy at the stadium.
The Houston Oilers took their first step toward moving to Tennessee a year early when Harris County commissioners approved their $5.25 million buyout offer.
The doctors who treated horse-racing legend Bill Shoemaker after a debilitating traffic crash were well aware of his paralyzing injuries and did nothing to aggravate them, attorneys told a jury in Los Angeles. Shoemaker is suing the doctors and hospital where he was treated after the 1991 accident.
The new West Coast Hockey League franchise in Tacoma will be known as the Tacoma Sabercats after the club held a contest.
