Gsl Girls Champs Tumble Cv, Mead Run Into Problems; Favorites Get Victories In Boys Tournament

The big mean machine that girls basketball has become in the Greater Spokane League in recent years developed a flat tire.

Fourth-ranked Central Valley and seventh-ranked Mead, GSL co-champions, lost Thursday at the Arena - and looked bad doing it.

The Bears, who looked overconfident, had their 12-game winning streak stopped by Ferris 48-43. The Panthers, who looked scared, lost to Gonzaga Prep for the first time in nine games, 39-32.

The boys side held to form, with GSL champion and third-ranked Ferris topping Mead 60-41 and runner-up Shadle Park rolling past University 66-43. Tonight, winners play winners and losers play losers for regional seeding.

The Big Nine tournament started Thursday and ends Saturday.

The games were the “travel” games of the District 8 Tournament, which means the losers go to Big Nine sites and the winners stay in town Tuesday for the Eastern AAA regional.

GIRLS

Gonzaga Prep 39, Mead 32

It may have been the worst half in basketball - Gonzaga Prep 14, Mead 10, but the Bullpups were laughing. “We were making fun of how low the score was, but we were ahead,” Prep senior Lisa Bradley said. Bradley then went out and scored 10 points in the second half.

The Bullpups ran off six quick points early in the fourth quarter to break a 23-23 deadlock and the way the offenses were struggling, that was a big lead.

Mead was 14 of 53 from the field and worse from the line, 2 of 11.

Ferris 39, Central Valley 38

Ferris overcame a 10-point deficit early in the third quarter and took a 39-38 lead with 1:55 to go after Karie Pruett hit a 3 from the right wing. Crystal Lee put CV back on top with two free throws but Pruett hit again from the same spot. Then CV missed a pair of foul shots and Christy Martin hit from Pruett’s spot to make it 45-40 with 40 seconds left.

“They didn’t respect me the whole game,” said Martin, who hit three 3s. “At first I didn’t have my confidence. Then I got confidence. Plus, I prayed the whole game, that probably helped.”
