Red Sox Sign Avery

Compiled From Wire Services

The Boston Red Sox signed free-agent pitcher Steve Avery to a one-year contract, hoping he can rebound from a rib cage injury and lead a staff that lost Roger Clemens.

Avery, 7-10 with a 4.47 ERA last season, became expendable after the Braves obtained lefty Denny Neagle in a mid-season trade with Pittsburgh. Avery’s lifetime record in 6-1/2 seasons is 72-62, all with Atlanta.

The Seattle Mariners signed catcher Brett Mayne and minor-league right-hander Paul Abbott to Triple-A contracts. Mayne was with the New York Mets last season, hitting .263 in 99 at-bats.

The San Francisco Giants signed outfielder Darryl Hamilton, who has a .291 career batting average in eight A.L. seasons and the highest fielding percentage in major league history, to a two-year contract.
