Packers Want What Only Mcmahon Has Green Bay Has A Lot Of Great Players Making Their First Trip To The Super Bowl

After the Buffalo Bills lost their fourth Super Bowl, their players were presented mahogany boxes to store their AFC championship rings.

“I put one in each corner, and I saved the middle part for whenever I win a championship. I’m going to set that a little bit above,” Green Bay Packers receiver Don Beebe said.

Beebe is a lucky Packer. Only Jim McMahon has a Super Bowl ring on a team that boasts an unusual number of great players making their first trip.

Reggie White is the NFL’s career sacks leader. Sean Jones is among the top 10. They have played 25 years between them. Eugene Robinson is the NFL’s leading active pass interceptor. Keith Jackson has caught more passes than any other active NFL tight end. Offensive linemen Frank Winters and Bruce Wilkerson have played 10 years each. Defensive back Mike Prior has played 11 years. Andre Rison is a four-time Pro Bowl player only seven weeks removed from an unceremonious release by the Jacksonville Jaguars.

None of them had made it to a Super Bowl until now.

White lost his Tennessee state high school basketball championship by 11 points, his closest call to winning a title of this magnitude.

“Everybody deserves this, but it’s not complete yet. It feels good, but one more and it will probably feel even better,” White said.

Backup offensive lineman Jeff Dellenbach grew up a Packer fan and was cut by the New England Patriots earlier this season. In his 12th season, he goes to his first Super Bowl.

“It’s what everybody comes into the league hoping for. Being back in Green Bay with family and friends, it means a lot,” Dellenbach said.

White has extra incentive because then-New York Giants coach Bill Parcells passed him up in the NFL’s supplemental draft of U.S. Football League players in 1985 and selected Gary Zimmerman. White went to the Philadelphia Eagles.

“Bill Parcells took two Super Bowl rings away from me,” White said of the Patriots’ coach. “I’m mad at Bill. I’ll try to make it hard for him.”

Quarterback Brett Favre said there has been a “win one for Reggie” mentality in the locker room all season, but this is a pilgrimage for everyone.

“For a lot of guys on the team, this may be their last chance,” Favre said. “We all want to win it for ourselves, but it would be great to win it and see Reggie’s face and Sean and Frank.”

Beebe knows that feeling too well.

“To play eight years in the NFL and play in five Super Bowls, that’s a little spoiled,” Beebe said. “I just want to know what it feels like to win one.”

What does he imagine?

“I don’t know,” he said. “Have a camera or a mike on me after the game and you’ll see my emotion and what it will mean to me. I’ll probably wear my helmet and shoulder pads all the way home. I get choked up just thinking about it.”
