Stockton Selected Academic All-Timer

Former Gonzaga University basketball star John Stockton, Washington State University kicker Jason Hanson and Eastern Washington University defensive back Kurt Schulz are among the for mer collegiate athletic stars named to the GTE All-Time Academic All-America team.

The honorary basketball and football teams, announced at the recent College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) convention in New Orleans, were circulated nationally on Friday.

Stockton, veteran point guard of the Utah Jazz, joins Bill Bradley, Billy Cunningham, Bill Walton and Danny Ainge on the men’s basketball first team.

Recent Stanford All-American Kate Starbird, who played summer basketball with the Spokane Stars, was selected for the second team.

Hanson, from Spokane’s Mead High School, was chosen as the second-team punter. A two-way kicker in high school and college, he is a standout placekicker for the Detroit Lions. Schulz, the starting free safety for the Buffalo Bills, was picked as a second-team defensive back.

The women’s basketball team includes college hall of fame members Lynette Woodard, Anne Donovan and Michele Johnson. The honorary football squad’s first team includes Fran Tarkenton, Alan Ameche, Lance Alworth and Raymond Berry. Merlin Olsen and Sam Huff head the defensive first team.

Teams were selected by a vote of CoSIDA’s 1,800 members. CoSIDA has been choosing Academic AllAmerica teams since 1952. GTE has been the exclusive sponsor of the program since 1985.
