Pro Gas Dragsters Featured At Srp

Paul Delaney Correspondent

The Spokane Pro Gas Association will headline Saturday’s drag racing at Spokane Raceway Park. Regular bracket drag racing is also scheduled and begins with time trials at 5 p.m.

Competition will take place in two classes, Pro Gas and Mod Gas.

Two weeks ago, Todd Hoerner won the Pro Gas race, and Ken Newitt of K ‘n K Racin’ claimed their first win in Mod Gas.

Friday is another race in the Mountain Dew High School Drag racing series. After a week off, stock car racing will return to the SRP half-mile oval on Saturday.

A racy reunion

A reunion picnic for circle-track competitors who raced in the Spokane area prior to 1982 will be held July 20 at the Nine Mile Resort beginning at 10 a.m.

The picnic is in its fourth year and according to spokesperson Karolyn Pitts the event has grown each year.

The public is invited to meet many of the old-timers who helped get racing going in the area. For further information contact Pitts at (509) 448-4508.

Modifieds in Montana 200

After running just three races in the first eight weeks of the season, the Northwest Modifieds will finish their busiest stretch of 1997 - three races in three weeks - when they take part in the Montana 200 Friday and Saturday at Raceway Park in Kalispell.

The race has been a premier late-model event, but this year the open-wheelers got an invite and will run preliminaries like qualifying, trophy dashes and heat races Friday with the feature - either a 100-lap main or twin 50 lappers - on Saturday.

Last Saturday, Colville’s Greg Ochs claimed his first victory of the season in the George Keenan Memorial race at Ephrata.

A smashing recovery

Last Thursday Rod Nelson’s Pro Outlaw go-kart came together with fellow racer David Pruitt during a trophy dash and went airborne, depositing Nelson face down on the hard clay at the ORV Park.

Nelson dusted himself off, got checked out by the paramedics and went back to check the damage to his ride. Both Nelson and the kart were cleared to race and Nelson went on to sweep all four of his events and add to his points lead.

The POKR karts will be back at it tonight at 6 at the ORV Park in Airway Heights.
