Yamaguchi Retains Lead In State Amateur Tourney

Chiharu Yamaguchi retained her one-shot lead Wednesday after the second round of the fourth annual Washington State Golf Association’s state amateur championship at Manito Golf and Country Club.

Yamaguchi, of Capitol City Golf Club in Olympia, shot her second consecutive 2-over-par 74 on the 5,849-yard layout. Yamaguchi birdied Nos. 6 and 9 to make the turn at even par, then bogeyed Nos. 11 and 15.

One back of Yamaguchi, as they were after Tuesday’s opening round, are Chikage Niwa of Indian Summer Golf and Country Club and Molly Cooper of Tacoma Golf and Country Club. Both also shot 74s.

Top scores among locals were: Lisette Fey Carter, Manito, 153, fifth; Britney Holt, Wandermere Golf Course, and Katie King, Manito, 154, tied for sixth; and Suzi Stone, Spokane Country Club, 162, tied for 12th.

The tourney concludes today.

Track and field

Bill Schuffenhaur of Moscow USA stands in fourth place after five events in the decathlon at the USA outdoor track and field championships in Indianapolis.

Schuffenhaur, ranked ninth coming in, scored 4,198 points. Leader Chris Huffins of Mizuno Track Club scored 4,499.

Schuffenhaur’s marks were: high jump, 6 feet, 8 inches; long jump, 24-3; shot put, 49-3; 100 meters, 11.07 seconds; 400, 50.03. His high jump mark was third-best among the 20 competitors. His shot put was fourth best, and long jump tied for fourth best.

The final five events are today. Three competitors dropped out. Schuffenhaur needs to finish in the top 10 to secure crucial sponsorship money, said coach Mike Keller.

College baseball

Washington State University assistant baseball coach Tom Chamberlain will not have his contract renewed when it expires at the end of the month.

Chamberlain coached pitchers and coordinated recruiting for three years. He and Cougars head coach Steve Farrington also worked together for 10 years at Lower Columbia College in Longview, Wash.

“My family and I enjoy the people and community of Pullman very much,” Chamberlain said. “We intend to live and work here for the foreseeable future. I am entertaining an interesting variety of offers at this time.”

American Legion baseball

Bill Tincup went 4 for 5 and had three RBIs to lead the Cannons (2-0) to a 12-7 win over the Blue Devils (0-1) in an AAA American Legion game at Shadle Park’s Jackson Field.

Jeremy Isherwood had two of the Cannons’ six doubles. The Blue Devils’ Abe Nisbet hit a solo homer.

The Bandits-North Stars game at Whitworth College wasn’t reported.
