Dear Heloise: I use fabric protectant on my white tennis shoes before the first wearing. Both leather and canvas may be sprayed, and other colored shoes, especially light colors, also would benefit.

When the shoes become soiled, I wash them and then respray. They seem to look nicer for a longer time and do not require washing as often. Jane McElmurry, Tyler, Texas

Dear Heloise: What to do with that partially used lemon? Squeeze the juice out of it and store it in a small jar in the freezer. A minute or two in the microwave and there’s lemon juice ready to use in your recipe. It works fine for lime juice, too. Miriam B. Tamsky, Harwich, Mass.
