Lake City Rolls In Soccer Opener Despite Using Depleted Lineup

Lake City opened its boys soccer season Tuesday without some of its regular players.

That may be bad news for the rest of the North Idaho Soccer League, though, as the Timberwolves trounced visiting Lewiston 10-1 at Coeur d’Alene.

Philimon Tudor scored three times, and Taylor Facciano and Bo Conley twice apiece for LC.

Missing some players who didn’t have enough practices in, the Timberwolves sputtered for close to 30 minutes until Noah Beck was moved from fullback to midfield. Beck assisted on a pair of goals 1 minute apart, and LC was off to the races.

Lewiston’s Mike Dancy scored off a corner kick for a 1-0 lead.

Also in the league, Wes Sabo totaled three assists and one goal during a 17-minute span of the second half to guide Lakeland over visiting Bonners Ferry 8-0 at Mountain View Middle School.

UI football

Dionicio Monarrez Jr. has been hired to replace Jim Senter as the defensive line coach for the University of Idaho.

Monarrez played college football at the University of Nebraska and has been a high school and junior college coach in California.

Monarrez was the high school coach of current Vandals Bryson Gardner and James Durrough, both graduates of Barstow (Calif.) HS.

Monarrez graduated from Bell Gardens (Calif.) High School in 1980 then served in the U.S. Army from 1981-84. He earned his A.A. degree from Cerritos College in Norwalk, Calif., before transferring to Nebraska.

He lettered two years at Nebraska. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Spanish and physical education in 1991. He was an undergraduate assistant defensive line coach at Nebraska from January until May 1990.

Monarrez then coached at Concordia College in Seward, Neb., for one season before becoming a teacher and the head football coach at Barstow. He followed his high school coaching career with season-long stints at Chaffey College and Cerritos College in California.

College baseball

Lewis-Clark State slugged four homers, including two in a five-run fourth inning as the Warriors whipped Gonzaga University 11-2 in non-conference baseball. The Bulldogs scored only in the first and ninth innings.
