Wv Scores 56 Runs To Back Twin No-Nos
Darcy Sohns and West Valley were unhittable Saturday.
Sohns (4-1) had a part in two no-hitters as the Eagles (3-0) stormed host Pullman 27-0, 29-0 in a Frontier League softball doubleheader. The Greyhounds (0-3) had just two baserunners in 10 innings.
Sohns struck out 11 of 16 batters in the opener. Rachelle Watson supported her with four runs batted in and a 4-for-4 performance.
Sohns and Gabby McClintock combined to fan 10 in the second game. Rachiah Boxley had two home runs and four RBIs, and Adrienne Imada went 3 for 5 with six RBIs.
Elsewhere, Rebecca Triplett and Terra DaCorte both threw one-hitters as EV (3-0) swept visiting Riverside 6-0, 12-1. Triplett struck out 10 in the opener, DaCorte 12 in the second game. The Rams are 0-2.
Track and field
U-Hi’s sprinters led the way as the boys won the 15-team Big Red Invite at Ferris.
Anthony Buchanan won the 100-meter dash in 11 seconds. Jason Berger (22.8) and Tim Buchanan went 1-2 in the 200 for the Titans, who won the 400 relay in 42.38.
James Berry in the 3,200 (9:41) and Cody Hirschi in the pole vault (13 feet) also won to help the Titans to 120 points. Second-place East Valley, with 91 points, received wins from Brandon Blize in the high hurdles (15.2), Jerry Claridge in the long jump (22-2) and Ken Skogen in the discus (144-6).
Mead’s girls, strong in field events, scored 143 to top the 16-team field.
Mead’s Jamie Wakefield won the long jump (17-1/4) and triple jump (35-4). Other Panthers champions were Katie Pollock, 3,200, 11:37; the 800 relay team, 1:51.52; April Gallagher, discus, 120-2-1/2; and Janelle Edington, javelin, 114-7-3/4.
Second-place Ferris, with 92 points, dominated the running events. Denise Kirstein won the 100 (12.7) and 200 (27.1), Missy Blackshire the 800 (2:19.51) and Jennifer Smith the mile (5:07).
Chewelah’s Deanne Perkins won both hurdles races, in 16.5 and 48.7.
WV’s Vinnie Pecht threw the discus a state-best 181-4 at the Yakima Relays.
Boys soccer
Despite just seven shots on goal, visiting EV (4-0-0) beat WV 2-0 to pull ahead of idle Cheney into first place in Frontier boys soccer.
The Eagles (3-1-0, 2-1-0) hit the crossbar three times with their 10 shots on goal. Goalkeeper Gabe Escobar notched the shutout. Gary Edwards and Chad Misterek scored in the second half.
Elsewhere, Justin Emch tapped in a late goal against a frozen Pullman defense as visiting Riverside/Deer Park (2-1-0) notched a 3-2 win.
Pullman (1-3-0, 0-3-0) didn’t react because it thought Emch was offside. Ryan Baker of R/DP added a goal on a free kick. Pullman’s Travis Lumpkin scored twice.
D.J. Norland set up a score at 22 minutes and added a goal 8 minutes later to help visiting Clarkston (1-3-0) to a 2-1 win at Colville (1-2-0).
The Bantams’ Ian McDougall, on a pass from Frank Baker, cut into the lead with 15 minutes left.
Baseball
Seth Schurtz and Joe Beckham scored two runs apiece and combined for three RBIs as Riverside (1-2) beat visiting EV 6-3 in the second game of a doubleheader to win its first Frontier game in two seasons.
Riverside was 0-18 last year after moving up from the Northeast A.
The Knights (2-1) won the opener 13-9 as Brian Lamarche (2-0) picked up the win and added three RBIs. EV’s Ray Ruiz and T.J. Horgan scored three runs apiece.
Elsewhere, Tucker Urdahl (3-0) won both ends of a doubleheader, escaping a bases-loaded, no-hit situation in the opener, as Cheney (2-0) swept visiting Clarkston 10-9, 7-3.
Clarkston (1-2) trailed the opener 9-4, but scored five in the sixth and had the bases full. Urdahl struck out two and escaped when Matt Conrath made a diving catch in the outfield. Cheney scored the winner in the bottom of the inning on Matt Caston’s RBI single.
Tyler Hall (1-0) pitched a complete game to lead host WV (1-2) to a 22-5 win in the nightcap and a doubleheader split with Pullman (1-2).
The Greyhounds’ Steve Chamberlain struck out 10 and pitched a complete game in the 10-4 opener.
WV’s Jeremy Isherwood, Jason Brown and Eric Enger combined for nine hits in the closer. WV’s Chris Hilsabeck was 6 of 9 for the day.
James Villars (2-0) pitched a six-inning no-hitter in the first game as Wilbur-Creston swept Valley Christian 11-1, 11-7 in a Bi-County League doubleheader.
