Russian Scores Upset
Anna Kournikova, a 15-year-old Russian who is part of the new generation in women’s tennis, beat Arantxa Sanchez Vicario 3-6, 6-0, 6-3 at the German Open in Berlin for the biggest victory of her career.
In reaching the quarterfinals of the $927,000 tournament, Kournikova for the first time defeated a player ranked in the top 10.
No. 12 seed Mary Pierce of France also reached the quarters, downing No. 4 Conchita Martinez of Spain 6-2, 6-0.
Showing signs of regaining the form that made him the world’s No.1 player five years ago, Jim Courier beat Switzerland’s Marc Rosset 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 in Rome to reach the Italian Open quarterfinals.
Following up his first-round victory over No. 1 Pete Sampras, the unseeded Courier established himself as a legitimate title contender at the clay-court tournament he won in 1992 and 1993.
Also reaching the quarterfinals was Goran Ivanisevic, the highest remaining seed at No. 6, downing No.12 Boris Becker 7-6 (9-7), 6-3.
Lindsay Davenport and Mary Joe Fernandez will lead the U.S. Fed Cup team when it faces Japan in July in a qualifying round.
Joining them on the squad selected by captain Martina Navratilova were Kimberly Po, Chanda Rubin, Jennifer Capriati and Gigi Fernandez.
