National League

Mark Clark allowed seven hits in eight innings, and Edgardo Alfonzo and Bernard Gilkey homered as the New York Mets snapped the Florida Marlins’ eight-game winning streak with a 2-1 victory Wednesday night at Miami.

Clark (5-2) struck out five and walked one while extending his streak of consecutive scoreless innings to 16.

Cubs 7, Phillies 0 Chicago

Kevin Foster allowed three hits over seven innings and Mark Grace extended his hitting streak to 15 games, leading Chicago to a win.

Pirates 3, Cardinals 2 St. Louis

Mark Johnson’s bloop double broke an eighth-inning tie as Pittsburgh, stymied most of the game by Alan Benes, beat St. Louis to end a four-game losing streak.

The Pirates played the game under protest after a late strikeout call by home plate umpire Larry Poncino led to a double play.

Rockies 10, Giants 7 San Francisco

Kevin Ritz pitched seven strong innings, and Ellis Burks hit a three-run homer as Colorado broke a four-game losing streak.

Burks hit his ninth homer of the season in the seventh and also had a run-scoring groundout for the Rockies, and Quinton McCracken became the first Colorado player since last July to steal home.

Braves 3, Expos 2 Atlanta

Pinch-hitter Keith Lockhart hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning, rallying Atlanta and Greg Maddux to a win over Montreal. It was the Braves’ sixth straight victory.

Astros 4, Reds 3 (14) Houston

Luis Gonzalez’s RBI single in the 14th inning scored Jeff Bagwell from second base, giving Houston a win over Cincinnati.

With two outs, Bagwell was intentionally walked by Scott Sullivan (0-1).

Bagwell stole second without a throw and Gonzalez, who was hitless in his first five at-bats, then lined a hit to left field. Curtis Goodwin’s throw to the plate was wide right, allowing Bagwell to slide in safely.

Padres 5, Dodgers 4 (11) San Diego

Quilvio Veras’ high chopper to second base drove in Chris Gomez from third in the 11th inning, giving San Diego its season-high third straight win.

Clearing the bases

Dante Bichette missed his second straight game for Colorado. He fouled a ball off his toe on Monday. . … Darryl Hamilton missed the game for San Francisco. He left Tuesday night’s game against Colorado with spasms in his right hamstring.
