Integrated Device Challenges Intel
A Silicon Valley neighbor of computer chip giant Intel Corp. has introduced a rival to the Pentium chip intended to compete in the low-cost desktop and portable computer market.
Integrated Device Technology Inc. of Santa Clara, Calif., says its chip is 40 percent to 50 percent smaller than comparable Intel Pentium-class microprocessors, and will be built at IDT plants in San Jose, Calif., and in Hillsboro.
Intel already has established a major presence in Hillsboro to become the largest industrial employer in Oregon with 9,500 workers.
