Sleepwalking Red Sox Win With 19-Hit Barrage

Associated Press

Major League roundup

Maybe the Boston Red Sox shouldn’t sleep so much.

They didn’t get to their hotel until nearly dawn following a night game in Chicago, then matched their season high with 19 hits and beat up on the New York Yankees 8-2 Thursday in New York.

“Maybe we should fly in at 4 o’clock in the morning for every 1 o’clock game,” Mo Vaughn said.

It was only the second win in 12 games for the Red Sox, last in the A.L. East, 13 games behind division-leading Baltimore. Boston got to the ballpark later than usual, then rushed through batting practice in 30 minutes.

“We were probably sleepwalking,” said Vaughn, who hit an upper-deck homer in the eighth. “I’d like to go home and get me 8 hours.”

Every Boston batter had at least one hit.

Rangers 10, Athletics 7 Arlington, Texas

Juan Gonzalez homered in his first two at-bats and drove in five runs, leading Texas to a win over Oakland.

Gonzalez hit a three-run homer in the first inning off Willie Adams and added a solo shot in the third, his seventh of the year.

Indians 9, Royals 1 Cleveland

David Justice hit his 13th home run and Cleveland improved to three games above .500 for the first time this season with a victory over Kansas City.
