Brewers N.L.-Bound?
American League president Gene Budig said the Kansas City Royals have made their decision on whether to switch leagues, and most baseball executives said Kansas City would remain in the the A.L., meaning the Milwaukee Brewers would switch to the N.L. next season.
Budig said he expects an announcement within five to seven days.
Baltimore Orioles third baseman Cal Ripken, who ended the season having played 2,478 consecutive games, said he has decided against undergoing back surgery to alleviate a herniated disk that caused him two months of severe discomfort. He said nerve damage has eased, atrophied muscles in his left leg have begun to recover and his range of motion is near normal.
The Florida Marlins decided not to exercise their $5 million option on Darren Daulton or their $3 million option on Jeff Conine.
Robin Ventura’s $6.1 million option was exercised by the Chicago White Sox, who declined to exercise a $4 million option on Ozzie Guillen or a $1.5 million option on Ron Karkovice.
Former Cy Young Award winner Bret Saberhagen of the Boston Red Sox was among seven players who filed for free agency, raising the total to 107 with 10 days remaining in the filing period. Oakland’s Jose Canseco also filed.
Third baseman Mike Bell, son of Detroit Tigers’ manager Buddy Bell, was acquired by the Anaheim Angels for pitcher Matt Perisho of the Texas Rangers.
