Sampras In Semis

Top-ranked Pete Sampras survived a sore shoulder and defeated Thomas Muster 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 in the quarterfinals of the Paris Open Friday. Sampras went to a clinic for precautionary X-rays.

Sampras is scheduled to play Yevgeny Kafelnikov today.

Kafelnikov entered the semifinals for the second consecutive year by beating Greg Rusedski 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.

Jonas Bjorkman of Sweden had an easier time getting to the semifinals when Richard Krajicek had to quit in the middle of their quarterfinal because of a knee injury.

Defending champion Thomas Enqvist defeated French wild card Guillaume Raoux 7-5, 6-2.

Venus Williams was ousted from the Kremlin Cup in Moscow, losing her quarterfinal-round match to top-seeded Jana Novotna 7-5, 6-4.

Novotna next will face No. 4 seed Conchita Martinez, the only semifinalist to drop a set. Martinez outlasted Sandrine Testud of France 2-6, 6-1, 6-4.

Second-seeded Arantxa Sanchez Vicario and third-seeded Irina Spirlea were upset.
