The WNBA received formal approval from the NBA Board of Governors to expand to 10 teams. Detroit and Washington will join Charlotte, Cleveland and New York in the year-old league’s Eastern Conference. To make room, the defending champion Houston Comets will shift to the Western Conference.

A Campbell University wrestler, who died after an early-morning training session, suffered a heart attack, medical examiners said. Billy Jack Saylor, 19, was trying to qualify for a meet in Buies Creek, N.C.

Ascent Entertainment Group Inc. said it received final approval from the city of Denver to build a $165 million sports and entertainment arena in the downtown area.

The Pepsi Center, expected to open in 1999, will serve as the new home arena for Ascent’s two professional sports franchises, the NHL’s Colorado Avalanche and the NBA’s Denver Nuggets.

Former Detroit Lions running back Lloyd Cardwell died Monday in Omaha, Neb., after an illness of several weeks. He was 84.

The organizers of the Nagano Olympics said today they have formed a special committee to deal with what has become a publicity disaster - the length of the men’s downhill ski course.

The international ski body has repeatedly said the Nagano course is too short.
