Italy Gains Cup Berth

Italy qualified for the World Cup by beating Russia 1-0, and Belgium advanced to the tournament with a 2-1 victory that eliminated Ireland.

In the second leg of the European playoffs, Yugoslavia and Croatia also qualified for the 32-nation field for next summer’s tournament, to be played in France from June 10 to July 12.
