Idaho Women Lose Season-Opener 73-71

The University of Idaho women’s basketball team lost its season-opener 73-71 to Lewis-Clark State on Tuesday before 953 fans in Memorial Gym in Moscow, Idaho.

The Vandals, who trailed 71-61 with 45 seconds left, went on a 10-1 run capped by Susan Woolf’s jump shot with 3 seconds remaining to close LCSC’s lead to one. Woolf, fouled on the play, intentionally missed the free throw. The Warriors, though, recovered the rebound to claim the win.

LCSC (3-0) won its third straight non-conference game.

The Warriors turned the ball over just 10 times, while the Vandals had 21 - 11 at the guard position.

“We need to get the ball down-court in pressure situations, and I need to do a better job coaching these guys on it,” Idaho coach Julie Holt said.

Jodi Benson and Amanda Campbell each led the Warriors with 15 points. Campbell, a guard, also grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds.

Alli Nieman scored a game-high 17 points for Idaho, while Kathryn Gussett chipped in 16 points, 10 rebounds and five assists.

Idaho plays Friday against Oregon in Memorial Gym at 8 p.m. following the men’s basketball game against Montana Tech at 6.
