Whitworth Tumbles In Opener

Whitworth got the jump on Western Montana College, but the Bulldogs had the last laugh.

Ty Thorn scored 18 points and hauled in 11 rebounds Wednesday night to lead Western Montana (3-0) from an eight-point halftime deficit to a 73-69 men’s basketball win over the Pirates in Dillon, Mont.

In dropping their season opener, the Pirates committed 23 turnovers and visited the free-throw line only nine times, hitting five attempts. The Bulldogs hit 17 of 29 free throws.

The Pirates received 14 points and 12 rebounds from Jeff Mix, 11 points from Kelson Ramey and 10 points each from Doug Schulz and Greg Jones.

“They’ve got a nice club,” said Whitworth coach Warren Friedrichs. “We had trouble with their two 6-8 centers (Thorn and Casey O’Keefe). They gave us trouble in the post.”

O’Keefe finished with 15 points and junior guard Jake Gustafson added 14.

The Bulldogs outscored the Pirates 39-27 after trailing 42-34 at intermission.

“We had the lead and we played good D,” Friedrichs said. “We just tried to keep them away and finally they caught us.”
