Hot Qb Leads Bruins

From Wire Reports

UCLA has compiled some impressive statistics during its three-game winning streak - 172 points, 17 turnovers forced and a red-zone efficiency of 95 percent.

But the most startling stat of all might be this: Since the second of his two interceptions in the Tennessee game, Cade McNown’s quarterback efficiency rating is 201.6.

That’s 23 points higher than the NCAA record, set in 1995 by Florida’s Danny Wuerffel.

McNown has not thrown an interception in 97 passes, since Tennessee returned an egregious first-quarter pass for a touchdown. In that 3-3/4-game span, he has completed 70 percent of his throws for 1,127 yards and 10 touchdowns.

“The two passes together told me to not force anything,” he said. “I learned you’ll get your chances.”

UConn suspends three

Three University of Connecticut sophomore football players, who allegedly assaulted a man in a dorm, were suspended from this Saturday’s game against Buffalo and face criminal charges in Storrs, Conn.

Police said the three were arrested about 3 a.m. Thursday after leading authorities on a foot chase. The victim was visiting students at the time of the assault.

Anthony Carter, 19, and Jordan Younger, 19, both defensive backs, and Robert Long, 20, a linebacker, are scheduled to appear in Rockville Superior Court Oct. 14 on a variety of charges.

Injury fells star linebacker

Inside linebacker Eric Mayes, one of Michigan’s co-captains, will be lost for the season with a knee injury.

Mayes was injured during Saturday’s 37-0 victory at Indiana.

Mayes was the fourth-leading tackler for sixth-ranked Michigan. His 25 total tackles include two for losses.

Former UNC star dies

George Barclay, the first player at North Carolina to be selected a first-team All-American, died Sunday at his Asheville, N.C., home at the age of 87.

A native of Natrona, Pa., Barclay played offensive guard and linebacker at North Carolina and later became the head coach of the Tar Heels, posting a record of 11-18-1 from 1953 to 1955.

Barclay was a third-team Associated Press All-America selection at guard in 1933 and earned first-team honors with The Associated Press the following year.

Barclay played briefly with the Brooklyn Dodgers of the old professional National League before a knee injury ended his career during his first season. He returned to the college ranks, where he coached at several schools the next 30 years.
