Witt’s Record Carries Lakeside
Mike Witt set a record in his final race on his home course, leading Lakeside to a 19-42 win over Colville in a Great Northern League boys cross country showdown.
Both teams were 4-0 entering the meet Tuesday afternoon.
Witt ran the 3-mile course in 16 minutes, 16 seconds to remain unbeaten in league races. He finished 16 seconds in front of Skyler Johnson of Colville.
Lakeside’s top five runners were within a minute of Witt.
Depth proved to be the key for the third-ranked Colville girls as they edged Lakeside 27-28.
Connie Williams ran 48 seconds faster than she did a week ago for the Eagles (2-3), but Crystal Evans led the next three finishers for the Indians (5-0).
Brie Meyer ran eighth, 11 seconds faster than the next Lakeside runner, to give Colville the win.
Chewelah’s Neil Small caught Seth Burkett of Pullman in the final quarter-mile then pulled away to lead Chewelah to a sweep at Deer Park.
Small finished the 3.1-mile course in 17:21, 17 seconds in front of Burkett.
The Cougars (4-2) edged the Greyhounds (1-4) 22-35 and both beat the Stags (0-5).
In the girls race, Eryn Cook of Pullman led the whole way, giving the Greyhounds (2-3) their first two wins. Chewelah (3-3) split by beating Deer Park (0-5). Cook finished in 21:18 to edge Chewelah’s Michelle Cook by 7 seconds.
The Riverside boys (4-2) moved into third by edging Newport 27-30 and host Medical Lake 28-38. Bill Warner of Riverside won the 3.1-mile race in Medical Lake in 16:39.
Medical Lake (2-3) edged Newport (1-4) 27-30.
The Riverside (5-1) girls stayed close to Colville by edging Newport 26-29 and running perfect against Medical Lake 15-50.
Newport (3-2) also was perfect against Medical Lake (1-4). The Grizzlies also had the race winner in Sarah Bell, 20.29.
Volleyball
West Valley started the fifth game with an 8-0 run to turn back Clarkston 15-5, 15-7, 11-15, 12-15, 15-7.
Rachelle Watson had 24 assists and Lindsay Closs had 12 kills and eight blocks for the visiting Eagles (2-0). Sophomore Hailey Jones had 10 aces for the Bantams (0-2).
East Valley kept pace with a 15-11, 15-7, 10-15, 15-7 win at Cheney.
Tricia Stookey had three aces and nine kills for the Knights (2-0), with Jenny Kann contributing 45 assists. Anna Getz had 13 kills and four blocks for the Blackhawks (0-2).
Colville (9-0) swept winless Riverside (0-10) 15-1, 15-6, 15-8 in Colville. Kristin Cornwell had two aces to finish the first game and Melissa Wollan had two aces in a six-point run in the third game that erased a 5-2 deficit.
Tara Gray’s all-around game sparked Chewelah (5-5) over visiting Medical Lake (2-8) 15-5, 15-8, 5-15, 15-2. Gray had six digs and teammate Chrissy O’Neal had 15 kills and 10 blocks.
At Pullman, strong serving got the Greyhounds (5-4) off to a good start in a 15-2, 16-14, 15-9 win over Deer Park (5-6). Becca Magart of Deer Park and Casie Schneider of Pullman had 28 assists apiece and Pullman’s Jessica Wolfson had four aces and 17 digs.
At Lakeside, Newport’s Carey Sauer dominated the first two games and Newport (9-2) rallied in the fourth game to beat Lakeside (5-5) 15-8, 15-5, 11-15, 16-14.
Soccer
Emily Squires played give-and-go with Kdee Anderson for a goal early in the second half to spark Cheney to a 2-0 win at West Valley.
Squires’ goal was the only one the Blackhawks (2-0, 6 points in league, 6-2 overall) needed, but Amanda Krogh scored on a pass from Kyla Hotchkiss to make it 2-0 in the 73rd minute. Cheney outshot West Valley (0-2, 5-4-0) 14-6.
East Valley kept pace with Cheney with an 11-0 win at Clarkston.
Malee Schumacher had three goals for the Knights (2-0, 6-2-0). Lara Bergen made 19 saves for the Bantams (0-2, 2-4-0).
Larissa Mueller scored six goals and added two assists as Riverside remained perfect with a 15-0 win at Chewelah. Abi Ogel scored twice for the Rams (8-0-0). The Cougars dropped to 0-9-0.
At Pullman (6-1-1), the Greyhounds remained in second place with a 7-1 win over Deer Park (2-4-3) as Kelly Prichard scored three goals.
At Lakeside, both teams scored early before the defenses took over as the Eagles (2-5-2) tied Colville (3-3-3) 1-1.
