Grinders Drop 2, Finish In 9th Place

The Spokane Grinders lost a pair of slugfests and wound up ninth place Sunday in the Men’s A Modified Softball Championships at Hialeah, Fla.

Kaytes Ford edged the Grinders 12-11 in the quarterfinal round. Later, in the losers bracket, Clover Leaf powered its way to a 25-19 triumph.

Unable to hold an 11-7 lead after five innings of the first game, Spokane led the second 18-3. However, Clover Leaf closed the gap to 18-12 then capitalized on four consecutive infield errors to tie the score.

Volleyball

Kim Exner led the way as Eastern Washington University improved its volleyball record to 2-1 by overpowering Dayton University in the Northern Illinois Invitational at DeKalb, Ill.

Exner pounded down 21 kills, hit .283 and accounted for 13 digs as the Eagles prevailed 14-16, 15-7, 15-2, 15-6. Teammate Lacey Coover led both teams in hitting, accounting for 16 kills with only three errors from 31 attempts for a .419 average. Coover also had 16 digs.

Setter Tony Schwinn supplemented her 45 assists with 20 digs, one more than Lynn Robison.

EWU hit .287 as a team with a .471 mark in the final game. Error-ridden Dayton hit only .092.
