Greg Rusedski, with a quarterfinal win over Lucas Arnold of Argentina in the Samsung clay-court tournament in Bournemouth, England, guaranteed himself of becoming the first British player to reach the world ranking top 10. Rusedski, runner-up last weekend in the U.S. Open, beat Arnold 7-6 (7-3), 6-3.

Garth Hall, former football coach at Idaho State University, has been named athletic director at Ricks College in Rexburg, Idaho.

Hall, who has a doctorate in athletic administration, was head coach at Idaho State 1988-91 and earlier served as an assistant coach at Wake Forest, BYU, Tulane and Oregon State.

Kansas State football player Robert Riggs was charged in a federal grand jury indictment of taking part in the robbery of a courier at Fort Riley, Kan., that netted more than $36,000.

Riggs, 23, was charged with aiding and abetting the armed robbery of a federal facility, conspiracy to commit armed robbery, solicitation to commit robbery and conspiracy to steal government property, said Jeff Lanza, FBI spokesman in Kansas City, Mo.

Mike Beers of Powell Butte, Ore., placed in his second event at Oregon’s Pendleton Round-Up, giving him a leg up on the 1997 all-around title heading into today’s finals. At 11.4 seconds, Beers posted the fastest time of the day in the steer roping event.

A federal investigation into alleged links between past and current Texas-El Paso football players and a tax-fraud scheme centers on former player Brian Burks, the El Paso Herald-Post reported.

Burks, a junior college transfer from Los Angeles, was a defensive lineman for UTEP in 1994 and 1995. He no is longer eligible to play football, but is still taking classes at the school.
