Tricky Indians Split With K.C.

Associated Press

American League

Matt Williams snared a rookie with the hidden-ball trick to help Cleveland win 6-2 and gain a split of a twin-bill at Kansas City Friday night.

In the first inning of the nightcap, the Royals’ Jed Hansen singled, then stole second and third.

Third baseman Williams then strolled toward pitcher Brian Anderson. Hansen strayed off the bag, dusting himself off, and Williams calmly walked back and tagged him out for the third out of the inning.

In the opener, Mike Macfarlane had three hits and capped a three-run fifth inning with a two-run single off former Royal Jason Jacome as Kansas City won 10-3.

Angels 7, Rangers 1 Arlington, Texas

Ken Hill allowed his former teammates only two infield singles, and Anaheim kept its slight postseason hopes alive.

Jack Howell hit a tiebreaking homer in the sixth, and Jim Edmonds matched his career high with four hits.

Hill (8-12) gave up a first-inning run and a second-inning single, then shut down Texas for his first complete game since last Sept. 22.

Tigers 5, Orioles 3 (10) Baltimore

Detroit blew a three-run lead in the ninth, then got a home run from pinch-hitter Phil Nevin in the 10th.

Despite losing for the seventh time in 11 games, the Orioles’ magic number to clinch the A.L. East dropped to four.

Baltimore’s Cal Ripken went 0 for 4 and is 3 for 33 in his last nine games.

Bothered by a bad back, he struck out with two outs and the winning run on second base in the ninth.

Blue Jays 3, Yankees 0 New York

Omar Daal and four Toronto relievers temporarily stalled New York’s bid to clinch a playoff spot.

The Yankees’ Dwight Gooden (8-5) pitched 7-1/3 innings in one of his sharpest outings of the year.

Chisox 5, Red Sox 4 (10) Boston

Albert Belle’s ninth-inning grand slam gave Chicago its first lead and Frank Thomas’ RBI single in the 10th won it.

Nomar Garciaparra broke Ted Williams’ 1939 Red Sox rookie record of 344 total bases by hitting two doubles.

Belle hit his fourth grand slam of the season and 11th of his career.

Brewers 7, Twins 4 Minneapolis

Former Twin Darrin Jackson hit a three-run double - one of six doubles by Milwaukee.

Jackson broke a 1-1 tie in the third with a bases-loaded double off Dan Serafini (2-1).

Clearing the bases

The homer by Cleveland’s David Justice in the opener was his first in 18 games since Aug. 30, his longest homerless streak this season.
