Jeremy Miller Chewelah Year: Junior Sport: Football Position: Qb/Lb
The quarterback position at Chewelah is downright strange.
The two-headed monster features an option guy and a more traditional quarterback. A left-hander and a right-hander. Two guys tough enough to start at linebacker.
“They’re best friends,” Cougars coach Roy Albertson said of senior Ryan Gray and junior Jeremy Miller. “It works best that way. The reason I (rotate quarterbacks) is they both start at linebacker. They both like to hit.”
“We’re always competitive toward each other but in the end we always have fun doing it,” said Miller, the righty. “We like to see each other succeed.”
The fourth-ranked Cougars succeeded last weekend in a showdown with No. 5 Pullman, the two preseason favorites in the new 2A Great Northern League.
The surprising part was the option guy became the passing guy. Miller took all the snaps in the second half when Gray dinged a knee and proceeded to pass for 137 yards and two touchdowns as the Cougars rallied with the final three touchdowns. The third score came on an option play Miller broke for 30 yards.
“It was kind of different,” Miller said of the game. “Usually it’s just the run; that’s what a Chewelah game is.”
Unless the Cougars need a left-handed, linebacking, thrower to run the option.
