Spain Gains World Cup

Spain’s soccer team became the 14th to qualify for the 1998 World Cup, winning 2-1 over Slovakia.

Spain (7-0-2) leads Group Six and is guaranteed of being, at worst, the second-place team with the top record. The top team in each of the nine European groups qualifies for the 32-nation field along with the top second-place team. The other second-place teams will be drawn into four home-and-home series, with the winners qualifying.
