Five years ago: Texas billionaire Ross Perot spoke with his supporters in Dallas on the eve of a meeting with representatives of President Bush and Democrat Bill Clinton, both of whom were hoping Perot would stay on the campaign sidelines.

One year ago: In Afghanistan, the Taliban, a band of former seminary students, drove the government of President Burhanuddin Rabbani out of Kabul, captured the capital and executed former leader Najibullah.
