Restaurant Worker Has Hepatitis A

A University of Idaho Student Union Burger King worker was diagnosed with hepatitis A on Friday, prompting a round of immune globulin shots for 25 other food service workers.

The food court, operated by Marriott Corp., strictly enforces a food-handling policy requiring employees to wear gloves while working. The infected employee had no infractions of the policy and North Central Idaho Health District officials say they believe the risk of infection to the general public to be very low.

The immune globulin shots can prevent the flu-like symptoms that often accompany hepatitis A, but do not prevent transmission of the virus. The virus has an incubation period of up to 45 days. UI officials said Monday they will continue to monitor the student population for potential spread of the virus until the semester’s end.
