Nic Dorm Doesn’T Meet Fire Codes

From Staff Reports

The 35-year-old dorm at North Idaho College does not meet several state fire-safety codes, according to a facility inspection report released Thursday.

“We are immediately making minor repairs that will address all of the applicable concerns in the report,” NIC spokesman Steve Schenk said.

The inspection, prompted by concerns from NIC’s maintenance staff, found a large number of damaged smoke detectors, an inoperable fire alarm, an uncovered electrical panel in the boiler room and an alarm system that does not comply with Americans with Disabilities Act standards.

Schenk said Sherman Hall, which houses 56 students, will remain open this summer. The college will decide by June 30 whether it will stay open in the fall, he said.
