Conductors Share Duties At Sandpoint

Travis Rivers

This year’s Festival at Sandpoint will include only two classical concerts - both featuring performances by the Spokane Symphony. Wednesday’s performance at Memorial Field in Sandpoint will be led by five conductors from the festival’s Schuller Conducting Institute.

Schuller selected George Mathew to open Wednesday’s program with Mendelssohn’s “The Hebrides” (sometimes known as “Final’s Cave”). Nag-Bushan Odekar will lead the first two movements of Mozart’s Symphony No. 40 and Alfred Duckett the last two movements. Conducting duties for Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7 are likewise divided, with the opening two movements led by Christine Meyers and the last two by Thomas Hong.

Schuller, artistic director of the festival, selected the five from his class of 20 conductors at this summer’s institute. The group has worked with Schuller since the institute opened July 27. Schuller will conduct the Spokane Symphony in the festival’s Grand Finale at Memorial Field on Aug. 15.

The festival is offering a special “Adult Classical Music Lover’s” package which includes ticket to both classical concerts for $28.50. This package is available only through the festival ticket office, (888) 265-45540.

The Festival at Sandpoint Young Conductors Concert begins at 8 p.m. Wednesday at Memorial Field. Tickets are $18.50, $8.50 for students age 18 and younger. Tickets are available through the festival office and G&B Select-a-Seat.
