BENEWAH COUNTY St. Maries

Residents collected 110 boxes of clothing and household supplies and $450 in a recent relief drive for people of Honduras whose possessions were lost during Hurricane Mitch. The relief effort was headed by Dana Benscoter, a Honduras missionary for the Church of the Nazarene.

BONNER COUNTY Priest River

Priest River Junior High P.E. students are selling candy bars to raise money to help buy a wrestling mat for the school. Their goal is to raise $2,200 of the $6,600 needed to buy the mat. The remaining funds would come from the athletic department. The wrestling mat will enable junior high wrestlers to practice at their school.

BOUNDARY COUNTY Bonners Ferry

Zion’s Bank will donate $300 to Valley View Elementary at a “Light’s On” ceremony today at 2 p.m. in the Valley View Library. The school was selected by the bank to decorate a corporate tree. Each year the bank selects schools throughout their service area in Utah and Idaho to decorate trees.

KOOTENAI COUNTY Coeur d’Alene

Lake City High’s marketing club on Thursday will sponsor its annual winter blood drive. The Inland Northwest Blood Center will set up in the school library from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The drive is open to the public and students. The center can handle up to 250 donors. Donors will receive water bottles and prize packages contributed by local merchants. Disney movies will run in the library throughout the day. For more information, call (208) 768-0769.

LATAH COUNTY Moscow

The University of Idaho Prichard Art Gallery will be hosting the annual College of Art and Architecture Faculty Exhibition through Jan. 16. Covering a wide variety of mediums and styles, this year’s exhibition includes paintings, sculpture, photography, collage, design projects and works made from a broad sampling of raw materials. Twenty-one artists, designers and architects will participate.

SHOSHONE COUNTY Kellogg

Natural Resources Conservation Service is seeking applications for the 1999 Environmental Quality Incentives Program. The voluntary program is available to people engaged in livestock or agriculture production. It offers five- and 10-year contracts with incentive payments and cost sharing for conservation practices in site-specific resource management plans. For more information, call (208) 378-5725.

PEND OREILLE COUNTY Newport

Local teen Tara Axel will soon be collecting songwriting royalties. Axel, 15, recently traveled to Ireland for the recording of her lyrics to the traditional Irish lullaby “Sleep in Peace My Love.” Axel met well-known Irish composer Garoid O’Leary last summer. Taken with Tara’s lyrics, the two collaborated on this and another number for his new CD, “Time Change.” The CD will be available in Newport this spring.

SPOKANE COUNTY Deer Park

Members of the Deer Park High School science club are planning a 10-day tour of Costa Rica next summer, where they will be part of a research program with Ecoteach. Students will patrol and clean up beaches, study nesting turtles and hatchlings and help transplant turtle eggs to safe nursery areas.

WHITMAN COUNTY St. John

Local mom Patty Leifer gives advice on a yummy, easy project for kids. She says to melt chocolate, then dip plastic spoons in it. Kids can sprinkle the chocolate spoons with candy and decorate the handle with a bow. The treat is especially good when used to stir coffee or hot chocolate.

LINCOLN COUNTY Libby

Lincoln County Youth Court Services is looking for citizens and professionals to serve on a board that recommends creative sentencing to juvenile offenders. Members must be 21 years of age and will be sworn deputies of the court.
