Mike Jackson’s free throw held up for a tense 18 seconds as Idaho held on to defeat Youngstown State 68-67 in the opening round of the KGVO/Montana Power Classic at the Civic Center Friday night at Butte, Mont.

With the victory, the Vandals (4-2) earned a rematch with Montana, which won the opener 69-62 in overtime over Saint Mary’s. Idaho defeated Montana 73-70 on Nov. 28 in Moscow.

Idaho had trouble shaking the determined Penguins (2-4). YSU led by as many as five, 61-56, before the Vandals rallied to tie and set up a nip-and-tuck battle down the stretch.

After Jackson gave the Vandals their one-point lead with 18 seconds remaining, the Penguins took the ball downcourt and called timeout. The play they set up resulted in a missed shot, and the game ended as players scrambled for the rebound.

The play of Idaho’s interior players made the difference. Cameron Banks led Idaho with 15 points, including two crucial field goals down the stretch. He was backed by 11 points and 10 rebounds from Jackson and a productive night by center Kevin Bryne, who had 11 points.

Senior guard Avery Curry had perhaps his worst night with the Vandals. He was 1 of 16 from the field and scored three points. Gordon Scott was held to seven.
