Chewelah Trips Ml In Overtime

The Great Northern League continued its season-long trend toward wildness Friday when Chewelah went overtime for a 64-61 road victory at Medical Lake.

Travis Meserve scored 26, including a 3-pointer with 11 seconds left to force overtime, as the Cougars overcame a seven-point deficit in the final 3 minutes.

Chewelah (12-5, 8-3) swept the season series from ML and tied the Cardinals and Colville for second place, one game behind Pullman. Chad Headlee hit 5 of 6 3-pointers and totaled 10 rebounds for ML (11-6, 8-3), which had won five straight.

The league-champion Scotties (15-5, 6-0) edged the host Bulldogs (10-9, 1-4), who missed two late chances.

Colfax’s Carey Kirkpatrick hit one free throw and missed a second with 3 seconds left. The Bulldogs’ Brent Damery secured the rebound but couldn’t score.

Freeman has the top seed into the district tournament, which begins Friday at Mead High.

The Indians are the second seed to district. Kettle Falls and Colfax play tonight to determine Nos. 3 and 4.
